MSME Loan Interest Rate Guide for Indian Business Owners
The MSME loan interest rate you are offered is rarely a fixed number — it is the output of your credit profile, the security you give, the product you pick and how well your numbers are presented. This guide explains the indicative ranges in the Indian market, what moves your rate, and how to work out the cost you are actually paying.
Indicative MSME loan interest rates in India
Ranges below are indicative for planning purposes. Every lender prices each case individually, and published rates change with the repo rate and internal policy — always confirm the current rate directly with the lender.
| Lender type | Typical product | Indicative rate | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public sector banks | Working capital / CC limit | 9% – 13% p.a. | Repo-linked; strongest rates go to well-rated, collateral-backed accounts. |
| Private sector banks | Term loan (secured) | 10% – 15% p.a. | Faster sanction, tighter covenants, pricing tied to your credit rating. |
| Banks under CGTMSE | Collateral-free MSME loan | 11% – 16% p.a. | Guarantee fee sits on top of the headline rate — check the all-in cost. |
| NBFCs | Business loan / LAP | 14% – 22% p.a. | Quicker, document-light, but expensive if used as long-term funding. |
| Fintech / unsecured | Short-tenure business loan | 18% – 30%+ p.a. | Flat-rate quotes hide a much higher effective rate. Always convert to reducing balance. |
What actually decides your rate
Your credit profile
CIBIL / commercial bureau score, repayment track record and existing overdue lines set the starting point for every quote.
Security offered
Property, fixed deposits or book debts as collateral can pull the rate down by several percentage points versus an unsecured facility.
Product choice
A cash credit limit, term loan, bill discounting facility and LAP are priced very differently. Using the wrong product is the most common reason owners overpay.
Financial strength
Turnover, profitability, debt-to-EBITDA and how clean your GST and bank statements look decide which pricing band a lender puts you in.
Tenure and repayment structure
A tenure mismatched to your cash cycle raises EMI pressure even when the interest rate itself looks reasonable.
Fees beyond interest
Processing fee, insurance, guarantee fee, prepayment charges and annual renewal costs all belong in your real cost of funds.
Work out your real cost of funds in three steps
- 1. List every facility. Write down each loan, CC limit, LAP, equipment loan and unsecured line with its outstanding amount and stated rate.
- 2. Add the extras. For each facility add annual processing, renewal, insurance and guarantee charges, then divide by the outstanding to get an add-on percentage.
- 3. Blend it. Weighted cost = sum of (outstanding × all-in rate) ÷ total outstanding. That blended number — not the rate on your newest loan — is the cost your business really carries.
If a flat rate has been quoted to you, the effective reducing-balance rate is close to double it. Convert before comparing anything.
